A sugar factory in Dompu regency, West Nusa Tenggara, will start operations soon to cover the demand for sugar in the eastern regions of the country.
“The factory, which will be inaugurated on April 15, will become the largest sugar factory in eastern Indonesia which is expected to meet the national demand for sugar,” West Nusa Tenggara deputy governor Muhammad Amin said.
The Rp 1.6 trillion (US$121.6 million) factory was built in 2014 by PT Sukses Mantap Sejahtera in Tambora district near a sugarcane plantation.
“As of today, a total of 6,000 hectares of land has been planted with sugarcane, and we will keep expanding until 12,000 hectares. The factory will be able to produce 750,000 tons of sugar per year, enough to cover the needs in eastern Indonesia,” Amin said.
Amin added that the factory was also expected to create more employment for local people.
